I had a great night at copynight yesterday. We had a rep from SOCAN stop by and there was a great discussion going on. I’m still not entirely clear on a lot of things so I’m holding off on a post about it for now. Still, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they talk to Michael Geist.

Podcasting legal guide for Canada [PDF] from CreativeCommons.ca – This explains the basics of copyright law, publicity rights and trademark law. It includes how to keep your worries to a minimum by using podsafe content, but also discusses the difference in reproductive and performance rights and which groups to contact if you want to license something that’s nod podsafe. Also touched upon: avoiding misappropriation of personality, legal issues when interviewing someone, and how to avoid getting into trademark trouble.

Discovering Congress’s API – How to be heard by congress, written for geeks. Worth reading for Canadians too.

Mycelium Player – This makes it a lot easier to get ahold of video clips of House of Commons question periods.

Blogathon – 48 posts in 24 hours. Proceeds go to charity. I’m considering joining, the charity I’d pick is Book Aid.

Words from a mashup artist [video] – “It’s like they put it there 80 years ago so that we could use it now.” How Socalled takes from the public domain to create.
